My best friend and I are building an open-source platform for micro businesses, freelancers, and contractors to manage their operations more efficiently. Our platform offers tools for financial insights, time tracking, invoicing, and more.

It's fully open-source, and we are adopting an open startup approach with public metrics.

We'd love to hear your thoughts!

I know HN frowns upon sappy positive comments, but I have to say:

I have been using Midday for a few months now and it's been an incredible experience – from the "ask AI" feature to the product notifications, every part of this product is crafted with tender loving care (TLC).

The fact that they're fully open-source and self-hostable is just cherry on top :D

    thank you so much!

we have so much more coming for Midday and especially the assistant!

We are so happy that we are following companies like Dub in this OSS-jurney!

This is great, of course I would only use this offline selfhosted if possible.

One suggestion is be more clear about what it does in the Github description. People will star it and might search for it and if they search for invoice or financial they won't get this up.

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

that's our goal! We are lacking documentation and an easy setup right now (focusing on our hosted version first) - because that's how we will earn money in the end

Great feedback, I will update it asap!

I will give it a try, I have tried several invoicing services and they are all bad, to the point I do it manually now, but I will check this out.

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

Awesome, invoice is wip right now unfortunately. But let us know what you want and we make it happen!

  • anonymouse008 7 days ago

Yeah, I feel most invoicing forgets it can be both time and fixed cost // then also only cares about generating, rather than tracking the flow afterward.

    Might be just me though?

    • pontusabra 7 days ago

that’s exactly what we think too! and we will support fixed and hour/qty based too!

also we will match incoming transaction for auto matching, notifications for missed payment and so on!

This might be a dumb question, since it's open sourced (thank you!), how do you guys monetize this?

  • pontusabb 7 days ago

We will offer a paid subscription for those who want to use Midday without hosting it themselves. However, as you mentioned, we will not earn anything from self-hosting. Going open-source means a lot to us, and the value we get back from the community is worth much more in terms of trust, extensibility, and general feedback around Midday

> nice to see @middayai generative ui features built on @vercel AI sdk midday is becoming one of the best OSS @nextjs real-world apps

I see this quote on your home page. What's your experience using generative UI?

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

For Midday, it makes a lot of sense to include graphs and visual components. Using the Vercel AI SDK, we can deliver this in just a few days. I really enjoy working with these technologies. You can check out the PR for the implementation here: https://github.com/midday-ai/midday/pull/125

Love the design. I’ve seen other startups do the same thing and fall on bank integrations, will you solve it?

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

Thank you! You are correct that relying solely on bank integrations carries some risk. We are committed to developing our own Engine (https://midday.ai/updates/engine) to be more flexible. This approach will also potentially allow us to add card functionality later on, enabling us to manage the entire process ourselves

Is there any documentation about self-hosting this? I don't see any docker stuff.

Looks super cool, love what you guys are doing

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

Thank you so much! We have so much fun while building Midday!

jmalmen 8 days ago

Super cool! Looking forward to the public beta

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

Thanks! We're working hard on those last things haha!

Beautiful software that too open-source.

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

Thank you! It's my co-founder Viktor who is the designer!

Saphyel 8 days ago

Well done! I'm curious why are you so dependant to Supabase ??

  • pontusabb 8 days ago

Great question! We are a team of two: Viktor handles design, and I take care of engineering. Using Supabase allows us to focus on features rather than backend infrastructure. We found Supabase to be perfectly aligned with our needs, and it's open-source! Plus, it uses Postgres, which we love.

Looks nice, but I have some questions: - I see that you store files. Do you expect people to migrate their files away from Google Drive (one of the most popular option for contractors and micro business) ? - Do you support multiple currencies in the financial tracking? - what do you bring to the table in terms of contractor management? This is a big thing for me as being rigorous and predictable when dealing with contractors I bring in for specific tasks is even more important than being rigorous for my internal processes. I would guess that many micro-business work with a network of contractors for the things that are not their core expertise. - what's the eventual business model?
