Ask HN: Could the power of the HN community find backups of GeoCities?

4 points by andrewstuart 5 days ago

Geocities was shut down by Yahoo in 2009.

Is there anyone here in the HN community who could possible help to find the final backups, if any exist?

Geocities was such a fabulous and unique part of Internet history.

If only it could be revived for historical purposes.

Is there anyone here who knows anything about any backups of Geocities?

Was it backed up? How were the backups done? Where were they stored? Anyone know anything?

By the power vested in the HN community I call for help!

Call me crazy, but have you tried asking Yahoo?

Worst that can happen is they quickly say no, but you never know. Something that old and irrelevant to their current operations, maybe they would open source the old code. Or maybe they deleted it years ago. But you won't know unless you ask.

I am curious what you would want with it? Geocities was coded so early in the history of the web that odds are that code isn't anything that you'd run again today.

That's what I'm doing by asking on HN - this is the best way to get to the right people.

Geocities has a uniquely creative design style that was a function of the Internet at the time and also peopke's relationship to it, and will never be repeated. It's design history.
