Anybody with a brain knew this was never going to work and Tesla was obviously lying about the 2 million reservations (okay not lying, omitting some 'small' details - like that the reservations were meaningless, much like their 'Robotaxi' is public, where by public they mean an app that lets you join a waitlist...).

Electreck article though is suggesting xAI / SpaceX are buying them not only to help Tesla, but the timing suggested that it was also to extract as much of subsides as possible. As this is a significant transaction between releated entities, there should be some documentation on that in quarterly financial statements. Quite curious how many they bought - based on Tesla influencers posts, at least for SpaceX it looks like a lot:

I've never been in one, but the design really looks challenging. I'm not sure it could beat the functionality of a standard "truck" and as a vehicle for "show" there be better options with more resale value out there.

    > “the design looks challenging”

That’s a hilarious way to put it

It's basically a Model 3 drivetrain with a weird funny heavy gauge stainless body on it.

I bet it kicks ass if you need a presentable daily but also tend to do a lot of stuff that tends to beat the crap out of a conventional car body. But how many people need that? Not many.

The 4Runner is for that use case. Or a Subaru.

I agree with whatever fashion writer said the design would go hard if it were the size of like an og fiat 500 or a geo metro. As realized though it just Smacks of Gender.

    • westmeal 14 hours ago

What does smacks of gender mean?

      • zippyman55 14 hours ago

Boomer here. I have worked with Gen Z and I think I can translate. I think it is a little masculine looking?

        • rsynnott 7 hours ago

I think maybe more that it is masculine-insecurity looking. Like, just looking at one, one would be inclined to make unflattering assumptions about the owner.

In other words; to state it directly but politely, the truck just screams "small penis".

And a matching brain size is required to not realize this before making the purchase.

In other words, it repels rather than attracts the opposite sex. It's like wearing a t-shirt that says "Don't date me!"

            • rsynnott 2 hours ago

There are now enough products marketed like this (I recently saw a product that was essentially being pitched as "coffee for men"), that I'm kind of wondering are people buying them ironically at this point. There can't be that large a market of totally un-self-aware men.

Excuse me, stewardess, I speak jive.

            Randy: Oh, good.

Jive Lady: He said that he's in great pain and he wants to know if you can help him.

Randy: All right. Would you tell him to just relax and I'll be back as soon as I can with some medicine?

Jive Lady: [to the Second Jive Dude] Jus' hang loose, blood. She gonna catch ya up on da rebound on da med side.

Second Jive Dude: What it is, big mama? My mama no raise no dummies. I dug her rap!

Jive Lady: Cut me some slack, Jack! Chump don' want no help, chump don't GET da help!

First Jive Dude: Say 'e can't hang, say seven up!

Jive Lady: Jive-ass dude don't got no brains anyhow! Shiiiiit.

Part of it has to do with how distinctive it is. And how distinctive the CEO’s antics have become. It seems the one has become a symbol for the other.

One passed me on the street a month ago and every single person raised an eyebrow, even the girls who went to church with the driver and said hi to him looked mildly apologetic as though they didn’t really want to be associated with any of it, but were too polite to say so.

I’d be surprised if sales ever recovered. Then again I was surprised the board approved a trillion dollar pay package for the guy. Maybe people think he still has a Midas touch despite the backlash.

Agree. It draws the eye in a uniquely negative manner. You don't usually see people this unified in finding something distasteful.

    • jqpabc123 3 hours ago

It looks like a movie prop --- with functionality to match.

Clearly not designed for what a truck is supposed to do.

As they say in Texas, "All hat and no cattle".

  • FranzFerdiNaN 10 hours ago

A larger part is that its just a piece of shit that is terribly designed and releasing it should crash any normal car company.

But Tesla is a meme stock and a meme company so nothing in the real matters apparently.
